One of the most essential and basic skills that your child will need as she grows is the ability to add. Adding is taught soon after, or sometimes even before, your child learns to read. Adding gives your child the foundation to go on to learn more difficult mathematics skill, as well as prepares her for learning life skills, such as money management, later in life. There are several ways you can teach your child to add, depending on her particular learning style.
Step 1
Use objects to visually show what happens when you add. For example, take four objects, such as apples, and place them on a table in front of your child. Explain the process as you add more apples to the table using math terms such as "add" or "plus" so he makes the connection between the action taking place on the table and the underlying math.
Step 2
Write numbers from 1 through 10 on flashcards, making sure to make an extra flashcard with another number 1 for when an equation equals 11. Make two other flashcards, one with an addition sign and one with an equal sign. Use the flashcards to quiz your child on basic addition problems. Increase the numbers on the flashcards as she masters the basics.
Step 3
Purchase a math-related game from your local toy store or children's learning store. Math games give your child the opportunity to have fun and learn at the same time. This will make your child more likely to want to continue practicing when learning is made fun.
Step 4
Purchase math software for your home computer or laptop. With advances in technology, education in math has latched onto new ways to teach children everything from addition to more advanced math through computer software and games. Software can be purchased online or through many stores that have a section for computers and computer software.
Step 5
Take the time to regularly practice adding skills with your child. One-on-one practice with a parent, teacher or other family member helps your child learn adding through repetition, as well as providing the opportunity to bond more with the child.
