Cymbalta, known generically as duloxetine, is a prescription drug used to treat depression, anxiety and chronic pain symptoms. Cymbalta is generally well-tolerated, however, some side effects can occur as a result of Cymbalta use or upon stopping Cymbalta treatment. It is generally recommended that individuals gradually lower doses of Cymbalta at the end of therapy and follow a physician's advice on how to best deal with any complications of Cymbalta discontinuation.
Dizziness
Dizziness is the most common side effect of stopping Cymbalta. According to a 2005 study published in the "Journal of Affective Disorders", over 12 percent of patients using Cymbalta will experience dizziness upon discontinuation of Cymbalta treatment. Dizziness symptoms are usually mild to moderate and resolve within a week of ending Cymbalta use.
Headaches
Headaches can occur as a side effect of stopping Cymblata and other antidepressants. This relatively common side effect of Cymbalta discontinuation will affect about 5 percent of people using Cymbalta. Other side effects related to headaches can also occur in patients stopping Cymbalta treatment, including tinnitus, a potentially painful ringing or buzzing in the ears.
Nausea and Vomiting
A 2006 article in the "American Family Physician" explains that nausea and vomiting are typical side effects of antidepressant discontinuation. Nausea and vomiting will effect 2 to 6 percent of people stopping Cymbalta. Like other side effects of Cymbalta discontinuation, symptoms of nausea and vomiting usually subside within a week of ending Cymbalta but may persist in certain rare cases.
Anxiety and Mood-Related Symptoms
Anxiety-related symptoms can develop upon ending Cymbalta treatment. Drugs.com lists the most common of these effects, including agitation, anxiety and insomnia. Mood-related side effects can also occur after ending Cymbalta, including mania and sudden unexplainable changes in mood. Confusion and mild sensory hallucinations can also occur upon discontinuation of Cymbalta.
Insomnia
Drugs.com describes some sleep-related side effects of discontinuing Cymblata and other antidepressants. Antidepressant discontinuation is often associated with insomnia and mild sleep disturbances. People who stop taking Cymbalta also often experience strange and vivid dreams upon discontinuation of therapy.
