Contac is a brand of allergy medication made by GlaxoSmithKline, and is a remedy for cold and flu symptoms. Contac is available without a prescription, and comes in three formulas. Each formula is designed specifically to relieve several symptoms, from a runny nose to a headache, and from a sore throat to nasal congestion. While each formula contains similar ingredients, some active ingredients vary.

Contac Cold & Flu Maximum Strength

Contac Cold and Flu Maximum Strength is a multi-symptom caplet designed to relieve symptoms such as nasal congestion and fever. This formula has three active ingredients to relieve symptoms: acetaminophen, chlorpheniramine maleate and phenylephrine hydrochloride.

Acetaminophen is a medication for pain relief and fever reduction. According to PubMed Health, acetaminophen changes the way the body feels pain and how the body cools itself. Each Contac Cold and Flu Maximum Strength tablet contains 500 mg of acetaminophen.

Chlorpheniramine maleate, according to Drugs.com, is an antihistamine that blocks histamine from attaching to receptor sites in the body, and a decongestant for temporary relief of nasal congestion. It relieves symptoms like runny nose and sneezing. Each Contac tablet contains 2 mg of chlorpheniramine maleate.

Phenylephrine hydrochloride is a decongestant. According to Rxlist.com, phenylephrine hydrochloride has many uses, but serves as a decongestant. Each Contac tablet contains 5 mg to provide with nasal congestion relief.

Contac Cold and Flu Non-Drowsy is used for temporary relief of nasal congestion, sinus pressure and runny nose. It also relieves pain associated with colds and the flu.

Contac Cold and Flu Non-Drowsy formula contains the same ingredients, acetaminophen and phenylephrine hydrochloride, as the maximum strength formula but does not contain the antihistamine chlorpheniramine maleate. Each Contac Cold and Flu Non-Drowsy tablet contains 500 mg of acetaminophen and 5 mg of phenylephrine hydrochloride.

Contac Cold & Flu Day & Night Dual Formula Pack Caplets

If cold and flu symptoms persist throughout the day and into the evening, Contac Cold & Flu Day & Night Dual Formula has tablets designed to take during the day and at night before bedtime for relief of symptoms.

The active ingredients are again similar to other Contac formulas, with acetaminophen, chlorpheniramine maleate and phenylephrine hydrochloride to provide relief from runny nose, pain and nasal congestion.

Each tablet in the daytime formula contains 500 mg of acetaminophen for pain relief and 5 mg of phenylephrine hydrochloride. The adult dosage is two tablets every six hours.

Each night formula tablet contains 500 mg of acetaminophen for pain relief, 5 mg of phenylephrine hydrochloride and 2 mg of chlorpheniramine maleate. The chlorpheniramine maleate is an antihistamine, and promotes drowsiness to help a person sleep. Adult nighttime dosage is two tablets.
