Zinc is a naturally occurring element that is necessary for the health of the human body. According to the Linus Pauling Institute, zinc is important for growth and development and the proper function of the immune, nervous and reproductive systems. Over 100 different enzymes within the human body require this mineral. To provide zinc, we must consume foods that contain this essential nutrient. Fortunately, there are several good food sources for zinc available.
Oysters
The University of Maryland Medical Center identifies oysters as the richest source of naturally occurring, dietary zinc. Just six medium raw oysters provide an amazing 500 percent of the daily recommended requirement of zinc for the average adult, according to Self Nutrition Data.
Other Seafood
Other shellfish, including shrimp, crabs, lobster and clams, while nowhere near the the amount offered by oysters, also provide significant amounts of this essential nutrient. A 3 oz. serving of Dungeness crab, for instance, delivers around one-third of the total amount required per day.
Meats
Lean red meats, such as beef, pork or lamb, are also good sources of zinc, states the National Institutes of Health. For example, 3 ounces of cooked beef shanks provide around 9 mg of zinc, over half of what the body requires in the day. Chicken and turkey are also good sources of zinc.
Cereal
Many breakfast cereal manufacturers currently fortify their products with vitamins and minerals, including zinc. According to the National Institutes of Health, the average breakfast cereal contains 3.8 mg of supplemental zinc, which provides around 25 percent of the daily requirement for the mineral.
