Michigan Military Schools

Established as an alternative to incarceration, Michigan's military schools or boot camps are geared toward defiant juvenile adolescents, according to the Boot Camps for Troubled Teens website. Several types of teen boot camps or military schools are available that are either state run or privately operated.

Types of Students

Michigan Military Schools are appropriate for youth who do not present any underlying behavioral or emotional problems, according to the Military Schools Option website. The programs provide structure through strict schedules and teamwork with a military slant.

Programs

Military schools in Michigan provide high-impact, rough, hard-hitting programs designed to remold struggling, rebellious teenagers, according to the Troubled Teens Guide website. Disqualifications

According to the Troubled Teens Guide website, Michigan military schools are not recommended for youth with emotional or behavioral problems such as clinical depression, Attention Deficit Disorder/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Oppositional Defiant Disorder. Michigan military schools also have a low tolerance level for teens with attitude problems such as disrespect for authority figures, low grades and low attendance records.

Regulations

Some military schools in Michigan are often short-term, however, long-term programs offer military-style training with emphasis on respect, responsibility and reality. Teens are housed in barracks similar to accommodations in basic training programs of the U.S. military. Bunk beds, foot lockers and a strict inspection system is a basic part of the program along with marching in formation, uniforms as well as "yes sir" and "no sir" responses of respect.

Costs

As of 2010, the tuition for military schools in Michigan tuition is approximately $3,000 to $5,000 a month for a nine-month program, according to the troubledteensguide.com website. The cost of uniforms and other outlay items is an additional estimated $1,000 to $4,000 and is generally expected to be paid at the same time as tuition.
