With the popularization of low-carb diets like the Atkins, South Beach and a host of others, low-carb eating has become a lifestyle for many. If you are looking to slim down with one of these diets, learning which foods to eat for meals and snacks is key. For the healthiest low carbohydrate options avoid packaged foods and look for fresh selections.

Vegetables

Non-starchy vegetables are the lowest in carbohydrates. Carrots, potatoes and corn should be avoided, as they are high in starch and sugar. The fiber content in vegetables is also subtracted from the total carbohydrate count in many low-carb diets, making them significantly lower. Low-carb vegetable options include greens, celery, radishes, cabbage, mushrooms, cucumbers, avocado and herbs (parsley, cilantro, basil). A hearty salad with a variety of vegetables, chopped egg and cheese can make a satisfying low-crab meal.

Fruits

Eating fruit is natural way to get your necessary vitamins like A, C, B6 and more. Fruit is also a source of natural sugar, which can allow you to satisfy your sweet tooth while avoiding simple sugars found in other sweet snacks. Most fruits are higher in carbohydrates than vegetables, but are healthy, nevertheless. The lowest-carb fruit options include cranberries, blackberries, raspberries and rhubarb. Fruits with slightly more carbs include peaches, blueberries, strawberries, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, grapefruit, watermelon and nectarine. The highest content of carbohydrates is present in oranges, grapes, bananas, cherries, mangoes and raisins. Most low-carb diets recommend limiting fruits and choosing wisely.

Meats

Most meats have little to no carbohydrate content, making them an excellent food for low-carb diets. Beware of packaged lunch meats, as they often contain hidden sugars. Also, avoid breaded meats, which can be high in carbohydrates. Ground beef and sirloin are acceptable, as well as chicken, turkey, pork and meat-free choices like tofu. Tuna and other fish represent great options that are low in carbohydrates, though oysters have some carbs.

Snacks

Low-carbohydrate snack foods include boiled eggs, nuts, cheese sticks, sugar free jello, pickles, herbal tea and a host of low carb snack bars and diet foods that are available in grocery and health-food stores. Vending machines and on-the-go selections are not typically low-carb diet-friendly options, so be sure to plan ahead.
