Most people want to lose weight without effort. Infrared body wraps may be a helpful addition to a total weight loss program, but even the very best body wrap will not allow for effortless weight loss. Using an infrared body wrap can be a nourishing addition to a regime of exercise, healthful eating and self awareness.

Calories Burned

According to author Nikki Rajala, it is estimated that infrared heat wraps can burn up to 1,200 to 1,400 calories in a session by simply increasing the body's metabolism through gentle infrared heat application, which explains the attraction to this method of weight loss. Far-infrared energy is believed to break down water molecules that accumulate and store unwanted toxins in the body that block blood circulation and impair cellular functions. Exposure to far infrared waves can steadily circulate blood, removing blood vessel blockages and promoting proper oxygen distribution to the body. The comforting heat from an infrared body wrap increases skin temperature, causing fats and oils to "melt" out of the skin's sweat glands, along with the toxins stored in fat cells.

Convenience

Infrared body wraps can be more convenient than other wraps because clothing does not have to be removed nor messy topical solutions applied. For the busy or modest individual, the conveniences of an infared body wrap are appealing. An infrared session can take from 30 to 90 minutes.

How it may Work

Advocates of far infrared heat believe excreting these toxins and washing them off your body lowers an individual's toxic load for improved cellular health while increasing your caloric burn without extensive effort. Opponents feel that the effects of far infrared heat probably do not have anymore caloric burn significance than any other physical activity and should be used in conjunction with regular exercise and healthy eating habits instead of being relied on as a sole method of weight loss.

Cautions

Discuss any medical conditions with the wrap technician prior to having treatment as some precautions are necessary with infrared heat. For example, far-infrared wraps may not be advisable for people with any type of heart condition, diabetes, varicose veins, infection, active shingles, open wounds, allergic reactions on the skin, or an over-active thyroid gland. If you are taking any prescription drugs, discuss those with the wrap tech beforehand because some prescriptions, like antibiotics, are contraindicated with far-infrared wraps.

Access

You can access the therapeutic benefits of an infrared wrap at a spa, health club or massage therapy clinic to see if you enjoy the process. If you feel that infrared wraps are contributing to healthful weight loss, you can also purchase your own to keep at home.
