Methadone is used to help drug addicts cope with withdrawal symptoms. Most states have clinics that offer methadone maintenance, which means they distribute the drug and monitor a patient's intake. Almost all the clinics also offer other substance abuse treatment and detox services. Most offer only outpatient services, though a handful offer inpatient services. The only states without clinics are Idaho, Mississippi, North or South Dakota and Wyoming.
Pacific Northwest & California
With more than 100 clinics in the Northwest and California, this area is well covered with detox and methadone maintenance services for heroin addicts and people with other substance abuse problems. There are both inpatient and outpatient clinics in these states.
South & Southeast
The South and Southwest United States offer nearly 150 clinics to heroin addicts and other substance abusers. There are clinics in Falls Church and Hampton, Virginia and Rossville, Georgia., that offer special services for women and people with HIV/AIDS. One clinic in Norfolk serves gay and lesbians and one in Oxford, Alabama, offer special services for criminals. A clinic in Cartersville, Alabama, offers special services for adolescents.
West & Southwest
There are not quite 60 clinics in the West and Southwest. All are outpatient except for one in Las Vegas, NV, one in Denver, CO, three in Phoenix, AZ, one in Albuquerque, NM, and one in Espanola, NM. These clinics all offer services for the full gamut of people, from people with HIV/Aids, to pregnant women, to people who suffer from mental abuse in addition to substance abuse.
Midwest
There are nearly 130 clinics in the Midwest---Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. Chicago has the most, with 27, that offer everything from inpatient care to special services for women, adolescents and people with both substance abuse problems and mental illness. There are clinics in Hines, Illinois, and Springfield, Missouri for vets; facilities in Columbus, Ohio, Omaha, Nebraska, and Indianapolis that offer special services to women; a clinic in places in Kansas City, Kansas, that offers special services to adolescents; and one in St. Louis that offers inpatient services.
East Coast & Northeast
There are a plethora of methadone clinics in Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, New York, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont. New York alone has well over 100 clinics, including 57 in New York City and 29 in the Bronx. New York City's Beth Israel Medical Center MMTP has numerous facilities throughout that city, while the Bronx is home to a number of Albert Einstein College of Medicine Division of Substance Abuse centers. Massachusetts also has many methadone and substance abuse clinics, most of which are run by Habit Management or Spectrum Health Systems. Spectrum runs inpatient and outpatient clinics. Pennsylvania has 50 clinics, including mostly outpatient but some inpatient clinics in the bigger cities. In fact, most bigger cities have at least one inpatient facility.
Alaska
Alaska has two clinics that help ween patients off heroin. Both the one in Anchorage and the one in Fairbanks offer additional substance abuse and detoxification treatments as well. The clinics are outpatient only, but the one in Fairbanks offers special services for people who have both mental illness and substance abuse problems and for criminal justice clients.
Hawaii
Hawaii has one methadone clinic in Hilo and two in Honolulu. All clinics offers other substance abuse treatment and detoxification programs, as well as special programs for adolescents, people with numerous substance abuse problems and for criminals. Hawaii's clinics are outpatient only.
Texas
Texas has nearly 70 clinics, most of which offer outpatient services for both heroin addicts and other substance abusers. Houston, TX, is notable for the numerous clinics that cater only to women. That city also has inpatient substance abuse clinics and one substance abuse/methadone maintenance clinic for elderly people.
