Pubic hair, or hair in the groin or bikini area, is often removed for cosmetic reasons by both men and women. Additional reasons to decrease or remove hair include hygiene, religious and sexual practice. A variety of methods can be used to decrease public hair in. Ingrown hairs often occur in the pubic area because hair tends to have a natural curl. A temporary bump appears for several days until the hair protrudes out of the skin.
Step 1
Cut the pubic hair as short as possible with manicure scissors, suggests Planned Parenthood. Avoid using household scissors with sharp tips. Wet the area with a warm washcloth or soak in the bathtub to soften hair and skin. Georgetown University's Health Education Services suggests using a loofah to soften skin.
Step 2
Apply unscented shaving gel or cream to the area. Massage until a foamy lather appears. Do not get shaving cream into the vaginal or anal areas.
Step 3
Hold the skin tight with one hand and hold the razor blade in the opposite hand. Shave in the direction of hair growth. Rinse the razor blade often, because the blade may clog. Do not go over an area a second time without applying additional shaving gel or cream.
Step 4
Rinse the area with cool water. Apply an antiseptic or aloe vera to prevent inflammation or infections from occurring. Throw out the razor blade -- a new blade is required each time you shave the bikini area.
Step 5
Monitor for any ingrown hairs. Do not pick at the bump if an ingrown hair occurs. Most do not require treatment and will heal on their own.
Tips and Warnings
- Shaved public hair often grows back as stubble that often itches in just a few days. Choose more professional methods of hair removal for longer-term affects including electrolysis or waxing. Only shave in the direction of hair growth; shaving in different directions increases the risk of an ingrown hair.
- Symptoms of an infected ingrown hair include a bright red bump, pus, inflammation and tenderness. If the hair is visible, use a sterile tweezer or needle to pull out the loop of the hair, advises MayoClinic.com. Press a warm compress onto the ingrown hair to open the hair follicle and allow the hair to grow outwards.
