Men, women and children can experience hair loss for a variety of reasons. According to Vegan Outreach, some forms of hair loss may be related to your diet. Both high levels of folic acid, which is also known as folate, and a deficiency of this nutrient can cause hair loss.
Types
Folate, folic acid, is one of the B-complex vitamins. It is also referred to as vitamin M or vitamin B9. According to MayoClinic.com, folate occurs naturally in food sources, and folic acid is the synthetic version, often found in supplements and fortified foods.
Function
Your body requires folate to build new cells. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, folate, like all of the B complex vitamins, helps your body convert carbohydrates into glucose, which your body uses as fuel. It also helps to maintain healthy skin and hair and assists with proper functioning of your brain. Folate also plays a role in maintaining emotional and mental health.
Sources
Dietary sources of folate include spinach, dark, leafy greens, root vegetables, brewer's yeast, whole grains, wheat germ, salmon, orange juice, lima beans and milk. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, all grain and cereals made in the U.S. are fortified with folic acid. Beef liver, peanuts, eggs, papayas and bananas are also good sources of folate, according to the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements.
Deficiency
Mild folate deficiency is somewhat common, although most people should be able to obtain enough folate from their diet. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, certain medications and conditions such as alcoholism, irritable bowel syndrome and celiac disease can cause a folate deficiency. Pregnant women are also at a higher risk of developing a folate deficiency, which is why women who are pregnant are often advised to take a folic acid supplement.
Effects
A deficiency of folate may result in hair loss. According to Dr. D. J. Verret in his book, "Patient Guide to Hair Loss and Hair Restoration Surgery," the B-complex vitamins are responsible for nourishing the hair follicle. A deficiency of any of these vitamins can affect your hair growth. Additionally, according to Vegan Outreach, an excess of folic acid supplementation can also cause hair loss.
