How to Manage Stress, Anxiety, Depression and Panic Without Drugs

Your mental health is very important, and if you neglect it, a number of issues can spring up that affect your physical health and ability to function each day. Stress, anxiety, depression and panic are all serious mental health issues that need to be managed and treated so that you can get on with your daily life and responsibilities. But you don't have to take medications to control mental health problems--a healthy lifestyle can help keep those problems at bay.

Step 1

Make a commitment to regular exercise. It's great not only for your physical health, but also your mental health. Regular exercise releases endorphins, which help you feel good naturally. Exercise also helps you relax and get more sleep, both of which can help reduce feelings of stress, anxiety, depression and panic.

Step 2

Eat a healthy diet. The foods you eat--or don't eat--can have an impact on your mind and body. If you're stressed, depressed or anxious, you may turn to greasy fast food as comfort food, which will only make you feel worse. Stick to a healthy diet, with fruits and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins to keep your body feeling healthy. Avoid fats, sugar, alcohol and smoking, which can all affect your mental health.

Step 3

Consider counseling. You can't always manage symptoms of stress, depression, anxiety and panic on your own. Working with a counselor or therapist with experience in those mental health problems can offer you great benefits. You can learn how to manage and control those feelings and symptoms and take control of your own thoughts and mental health. A therapist can also help you learn techniques to manage those symptoms when they arise.

Step 4

Set aside time for fun. Nothing relieves stress, depression, anxiety or panic like a good time and a hearty laugh. If you spend your whole day worrying and working, you'll never get relief. Make time each day to just relax, unwind and do something you enjoy, and laugh as much as you can. You'll feel relaxed just looking forward to your special time, whether it's dinner with a friend, an exercise class, a movie by yourself or a mini-shopping spree.

Tips and Warnings

  • Find a friend and companion with whom to confide about how you're feeling. It will help relieve some symptoms to have a buddy as a sounding board, and she can be there to suggest help if you need it.
  • These are serious mental health issues that can't always be managed on your own. Seek immediate help if you find your symptoms are overwhelming and you can't function--and always if you have any thoughts of suicide.
