Facts on Himalayan Goji Berries

Facts on Himalayan Goji Berries

1. Goji Berries are Super Fruit

Himalayan goji berries are a fruit that grows on the goji plant in the areas around the Himalayan Mountains. In 2006, Time Magazine called the goji berry the super fruit of the year, and Dr. Howard Murad recently called it the most nutrient-dense food on the planet. This red fruit tastes like a cross between a cranberry and a cherry.

2. Discover the Health Benefits of Gojis

The goji berry contains 21 trace minerals and 18 amino acids, eight of which are essential amino acids. Some of these minerals include zinc, calcium, germanium, selenium and phosphorus. The goji berry strengthens the heart, cures insomnia and forgetfulness and helps slow the aging process. It also helps alleviate morning sickness in pregnant women and can help cure sexual dysfunction. As an antioxidant, the goji berry also has cancer-fighting properties and is helpful in the treatment of hepatitis B. It helps to detoxify the body and promotes weight loss.

3. Cooking With Goji Berries

You can put goji berries in baked goods, trail mixes and cereals. Some recipes for lamb stew contain goji berries, as well as some rice dishes. Goji berry juice is also available, and many people use goji berries in smoothies. You can also put goji berries in fruit salads or ice cream. These berries are similar in consistency to cranberries or raisins and you can substitute them in recipes for either of these fruits. They have a slightly grainier texture than raisins--more in line with a dried fig--and have less sugar than most dried fruits.

4. The Goji Berry/Wolfberry Debate

Another name for the goji berry is wolfberry, which is the common name for Lycium Barbarium. Whether a wolfberry and a goji berry is the same thing is a debated subject. Tibet has come to be known as the home of the goji berry, but some people claim that the highest quality goji berries come from two northwest provinces in China--the Ningxia and Xinjiang provinces. The soil in these provinces is rich and there is very little pollution, which is a problem in the lower elevations in China.

5. Soak Your Goji Berries

Many people prefer to soak goji berries before eating them. You can soak them in water or juice for an hour.
