Although testosterone is considered a male hormone, it is also needed for women's health at much lower levels than for men.

Testosterone is a natural androgen hormone. According to Medical-Dictionary.com, testosterone is responsible for bone growth and muscle strength.

A woman produces testosterone in the ovaries and adrenal glands. Testosterone is required in women for energy, estrogen production and maintaining a healthy libido. Testosterone is also important in bone, muscle and heart health in women.

Consult with a physician before supplementing any amount of testosterone. A physician may be able to determine any deficiencies or other health issue associated with low levels of testosterone.

Weight Bearing Exercises

Exercise is one way to increase testosterone as well as boost energy. Weight-bearing exercises are exercises using the body's own weight to place significant pressure on the bones and muscles. The added weight causes the muscles to signal for more energy. Weight bearing exercises include walking, running, weightlifting and even dancing.

Of all the exercise categories, weight bearing increases testosterone naturally because the muscles require more testosterone to complete the exercise.

Personal trainers recommend squats and push-ups as weight-bearing exercises that will increase testosterone along with improving muscle and bone health. Adding low-weight hand or ankle weights to walking increases the energy needed, allowing the body to produce more testosterone.

Eating Right

The food put into our body is just as important as exercise, and many foods naturally increase testosterone.

Foods such as salmon, flax seeds and avocados all contain high amounts of essential fatty acids. Essential fatty acids do not contain testosterone but are responsible for the manufacturing of the amino acids necessary for testosterone production.

Additionally, vitamins B and C are building blocks for testosterone production. Supplementing or eating citrus fruits are ways to add vitamin C to the diet. Vitamin B is available in avocados and fish.

Salmon for lunch with a sliced avocado and salad provides the vitamins and essential fatty acids necessary for testosterone production.

Sex Increasing Testosterone

Testosterone is needed for a strong, healthy libido and creating sensitivity for a woman's arousal. Sex is a way to increase testosterone. The body produces testosterone for sexual arousal and stamina. By having sexual intercourse, the body becomes depleted of testosterone and signals the body to make more.

Doctors recommend having sexual intercourse at least once weekly for natural stimulation of testosterone production and stress reduction.
