Vitamins are organic substances essential for life and health. Most vitamins cannot be produced by the body and therefore diet and supplementation are important to prevent deficiencies and improve overall health. ADHD patients have special nutrient requirements to help improve brain function. While all B vitamins are important, additional supplementation with B3, B5, B6, B12 vitamins is often required for ADHD sufferers. Vitamins C, D and E may also help reduce ADHD-related symptoms.

Vitamins B3, B5

Children and adults with ADHD frequently need extra B3 and B5 vitamins. Vitamin B3 plays a part in the function of the nervous system and can help in the treatment of schizophrenia, ADHD and other mental illnesses. Vitamin B5 is the most important stress fighter and is beneficial for people who have ADHD because they have low tolerance for stress. It can also reduce other ADHD-related symptoms such as fatigue, mood instability and difficulty in concentration.

Vitamins B6, B12

Vitamin B6 is important for brain function and is also needed to maintain normal levels of magnesium, a mineral that is often deficient in ADHD patients. As with all other B vitamins, B12 vitamin plays an important role in the health of the nervous system and a shortage of it can translate to fatigue, moodiness, memory problems and anxiety. Sufficient quantities of vitamin B12 also ensure a proper synthesis of S-adenosyl-methionine or SAMe, an amino acid that is known to promote concentration, a feeling of well-being and alertness.

Vitamins C, D, E

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant, an immune system booster. Vitamin C is a cofactor for the synthesis of a neurotransmitter called norepinephrine, imbalances of which are also linked with ADHD. ADHD patients have typically low levels of essential fatty acids and ferritin, and both nutrients are better absorbed in combination with vitamin C.

Vitamin E is another antioxidant nutrient that protects brain tissue from free radicals and improves brain circulation.

Vitamin D is essential for brain function, growth and development. A deficiency of this vitamin is associated with depression, mood swings, cognitive and psychological problems, and supplementation with Vitamin D can improve the same symptoms in ADHD patients.

Considerations

Vitamins can help alleviate symptoms of ADHD; however, they can be toxic in high doses, especially vitamins D and E. Vitamin B3 should not be taken by people who have liver problems, gout or high blood pressure. It is highly recommended to consult a qualified professional who will prescribe the optimal dosage of vitamins on an individual basis for ADHD patients.
