The ribeye steak is beef steak cut from a ribeye roast of a steer. Among the better cuts, a ribeye steak has little connective tissue and a relatively high level of fat marbling which make the meat tender and flavorful. A good source of nutrition, the ribeye steak provides high levels of protein, vitamins and minerals. However, the meat is also high in both saturated fat and cholesterol and should be eaten in moderation.

Contents

An 8 oz. serving of ribeye steak weighs 233 g, according to the USDA Nutrient Database. Approximately 64 g of that serving consists of protein, while fat makes up around 34 g. What remains consists of indigestible matter, other nutrients and water. There are no appreciable amounts of carbohydrates or dietary fiber in a ribeye steak.

Calories

There are about 576 calories in an 8 oz. serving of ribeye steak. Around 266 calories come from protein. Fat delivers around 310 calories. The steak can serve as almost 30 percent of the total daily caloric intake recommended for the average adult.

Vitamins

Ribeye steak provides significant amounts of certain vitamins. An 8 oz. serving contains substantial quantities of niacin at almost 17 mg or around 100 percent, vitamin B6 at 1.3 mg or 100 percent and vitamin B12 at 1.3 mcg or 50 percent of the daily recommended amounts for these vitamins. Lesser yet still significant amounts of vitamins within a ribeye steak include vitamin E, vitamin K, thiamin, riboflavin, folate and pantothenic acid.

Minerals

Several dietary minerals are also available within a ribeye steak. An 8 oz. serving is especially high in selenium at almost 70 mcg or 125 percent, zinc at around 12 mg or over 100 percent and phosphorus at nearly 500 mg or around 70 percent of the daily recommended intake. Other significant amounts of minerals include iron at 4 mg or 50 percent and potassium at almost 800 mg or 17 percent. Small measures of calcium, magnesium and copper are also provided by this cut of meat.

Warning

The American Heart Association warns that diets high in saturated fat and cholesterol may result in an increased risk of heart disease. A single 8 oz. serving of ribeye steak contains almost 260 mg of cholesterol or over 85 percent of the daily recommended amount. The same serving also contains around 13 g of saturated fat or 67 percent of the recommended daily fat intake.
