Certain conditions, such as motion sickness, can cause dizziness, but your diet can also influence this type of side effect. Even something as small as skipping a meal can cause dizziness, along with other side effects. If you commonly experience dizziness, you may have a more serious medical condition.

Effects

When you experience dizziness, you may notice that the room seems to spin, you feel disoriented, your vision might become blurred or have unsteady movements with your hands. Depending upon the severity of the dizziness, you may become nauseous and possibly vomit. Resting on a flat surface may help ease some of these symptoms.

Causes

Skipping meals can cause you to become dizzy and faint. Consuming certain foods or overindulging in certain foods can make you constipated, nauseous and cause dizziness, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. If your diet does not provide enough iron, you may develop iron-deficiency anemia, which can make you feel dizzy. Diabetics can experience dizziness when blood sugar levels plummet.

Significance

If you feel dizzy on a regular basis, you may not be eating enough, which can lead to other conditions such as anorexia. Those who suffer from anorexia often experience moodiness, difficulty concentrating, headaches and dizziness. Not getting enough nutrients can also cause your bones to become weak and brittle and make you feel more fatigued and agitated.

Warning

Dizziness can cause you to pass out or experience a blackout. This can indicate another serious condition is present. Alert friends or family members of any symptoms you are experiencing so if something should happen, they can relay to medical personnel what took place and how you were feeling at the time of the incident. If you are diabetic and experience dizziness, a friend or family member may be able to get you hard candy to suck on to raise your blood sugar levels until medical help arrives.

Considerations

Never skip meals, no matter how much of a hurry you are in. If you cannot squeeze in a full meal, take a healthy snack with you such as an apple, banana or peanut butter toast to help tide you over until your next meal. Apples and bananas are rich in fiber, which helps keep you full, while peanut butter toast provides your body with plenty of protein and carbs to give your body energy to get you through to your next meal. If you experience dizziness on a regular basis, schedule an appointment with your health care provider to discuss the possibilities of why this is occurring and how to prevent it. He may require blood samples to test you for diabetes, iron-deficiency anemia or other conditions.
