Oysters belong to a group of animals known as mollusks. There are many varieties of edible oysters, including Pacific, Olympia and Atlantic. Oysters are an extremely popular seafood dish. Edible oysters don't produce valuable pearls, but they are valued for their exceptional taste and nutrition.

Taste

Oysters have an intense taste that many seafood lovers find irresistible. Oysters offer several options when it comes to cooking techniques. You can prepare oysters by baking, boiling, broiling, frying or sautéing them. Some seafood lovers like to eat their oysters raw. You can season your oyster dishes with sauces or spices like parsley, garlic and thyme to further enhance their already rich flavor.

Nutritional Content

Oysters are very high in many essential nutrients like iron, zinc, selenium, copper, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, and omega-3s. Oysters also contain a wide range of vitamins like vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin D and B vitamins. Oysters contain very low levels of harmful substances like saturated fats, cholesterol and sodium.

Cognitive Boost

Is your mind feeling a bit foggy? If so, munching on a few ounces of oysters may help give your sluggish brain a slight boost. According to the Alaskan Shellfish Growers Association, oysters contain a protein that is rich in an amino acid called tyrosine. Your brain uses this amino acid to produce chemicals that may have the ability to help enhance your mental function and elevate your mood.

Libido Boost

A popular myth concerning oysters is that eating them enhances your libido. The Interstate Shellfish Sanitation Conference states that currently, no scientific evidence exists that conclusively proves this to be true. However, recent research suggests that there may yet be some truth to the popular tale. This is because the high zinc content of oysters may act by encouraging your body to release elevated levels of sex hormones. Still, more research is necessary.

In addition to the many benefits attributed to oysters, eating them can also involve potentially dangerous risks. Some oysters can harbor a harmful bacterium called Vibrio vulnificus. A Vibrio vulnificus infection can make you extremely sick. It can also be potentially life-threatening if you suffer from health condition like cancer, diabetes or liver disease. The easiest way to contract a Vibrio vulnificus infection is by eating raw oysters. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the only way to completely kill Vibrio vulnificus is through exposure to high heat. The FDA recommends thoroughly cooking your oysters before eating them. In addition, those with compromised liver function should avoid eating oysters because of their high copper content.
