Fat cells bulging through your connective tissue network is called cellulite. Aside from expensive, time-consuming professionally administered cosmetic procedures, the best way to get rid of cellulite is to lose weight. You can lose weight and reduce the appearance of cellulite through a combination of physical activity and diet.

Some people need more calories to maintain their weight than others. Maintenance caloric intake is determined by your basal metabolic rate, the number of calories burned while you are rest -- generally 60 percent to 75 percent of your caloric needs each day. Use a BMR calculator to find your number. Then, consume 500 fewer calories each day by cutting portion size by 10 percent to 15 percent, limiting fat intake to 20 percent to 35 percent of your total caloric intake, limiting salt and alcohol consumption, and eating whole grains, lean proteins, low-fat dairy and fresh fruits and vegetables.

Consult with your medical doctor to determine the best exercises and intensity level for you. Low- to moderate-intensity exercises are effective, but high-intensity exercise increases your metabolic rate throughout the day. Perform 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of high-intensity aerobic exercise each week for weight maintenance, and increase the amount of time you spend exercising for weight loss. Also perform strength-training exercises two to three times each week to build muscle, which increases your BMR. ACE recommends one to two sets of 12 to 15 repetitions of upper-body and lower-body exercises.
