The herpes simplex virus is responsible for causing cold sores and genital herpes. There are two forms of the herpes simplex virus, known as HSV-1 and HSV-2. According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, the HSV-1 virus affects the body above the waist while effects of the HSV-2 are confined to below the waist. The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology notes that around one in six adults in the United States has HSV-2, while 50 percent to 75 percent of adults are positive for HSV-1. There is no vaccine against the herpes simplex virus and no cure for it, although medications are available to treat sores. Some herbs may help alleviate symptoms although there is no scientific evidence to prove this.

Siberian Ginseng

Siberian ginseng, also known as eleuthero, is traditionally used to prevent colds and flu and boost energy levels, notes the University of Maryland Medical Center website. According to MedlinePlus, it may also reduce the severity of genital herpes and may reduce the duration of infection. The UMMC website notes that Siberian ginseng may cause side effects including headache, nausea, nosebleed and drowsiness. Do not take this herb if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or if you suffer from narcolepsy or high blood pressure. Siberian ginseng may interact with other drugs including anticoagulants, insomnia and some heart medications.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera gel applied topically to genital herpes may aid healing, notes the UMMC website. However, it is not known whether aloe can help reduce the severity of cold sores. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, aloe vera has been used as medicinal remedy for 6,000 years and is typically used to heal wounds and aid skin healing. NCCAM notes that topical use of aloe vera is unlikely to cause any significant side effects, although oral use may cause abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil is used to treat a number of conditions, including nausea, headaches and symptoms of the common cold. According to the UMMC website, peppermint oil may also prevent the herpes simplex virus from reproducing. Peppermint oil can be diluted in a carrier oil such as grape seed oil and applied topically to cold sores or may be taken orally in small doses. It may cause side effects, particularly when taken orally; however topical application may cause an allergic reaction in some people.
