Copper peptides are widely regarded as one of the best wound-healing agents. Their benefits also apply to overall skincare treatments, promoting healthier looking skin by reducing the appearance of wrinkles. A number of products containing copper peptides are available to treat various wounds and skin damage. Be sure you only use products that contain copper peptides, and not pure copper.

Many topical products designed to improve skin condition often contain copper combined with peptides. Peptides are small protein fragments that, along with copper, stimulate collage production and, according to the Mayo Clinic, can improve the effectiveness of antioxidants. The copper compound escalates the amount of protein synthesis in collagen and elastin, which aids in wound healing.

Types of Peptides

Certain copper peptides are excellent wound-healing agents. They spur on cell formation and produce the right amount of collagen to help develop connective tissue in wounds. In particular, the tripeptide-copper complex glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine-Cu2+ has shown a great propensity to stimulate the synthesis of cell-growth components, according to a study published by the Laboratoire de Biochimie at the Faculte de Medecine in Reims, France.

Types of Wounds

Copper peptide products are widely used in medicine and at home to treat a variety of wounds. The increased collagen produced by copper peptides can help reduce the appearance of acne scars. Because the compound promotes rapid cell turnover, sun-damaged skin heals more quickly when treated with copper peptides. Skin affected by laser treatments, skin grafts or chemical peels will also benefit from copper peptides' wound-healing effects.

Products with Copper Peptides

Some over-the-counter ointments that contain copper peptides include CP Serum, ProCyte Neova and Neutrogena Visibly Firm with Active Copper. ProCyte features a full line of skincare products that contain copper peptides, including a therapy lotion, serum and cream. Other brands with copper peptide skincare creams are Osmotics Cosmeceuticals and June Jacobs.

Even though copper is found in every cell of the body, it is a toxic metal that can cause adverse health effects when used liberally. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends use only of products that contain copper peptides, and not pure copper.
