The Big Breakfast Diet is the brainchild of Dr. Daniela Jakubowicz, a clinical professor at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, and the Hospital de Clinicas Caracas in Venezuela. She promises you can eat what you want and lose weight as long as cravings such as pizza and chocolate get eaten before 9 a.m.
The Logic
The body processes food differently at different times of the day, according to Everyday Diet's summary of the Big Breakfast Diet and Jakubowicz arguments. In the morning, the food you eat helps to boost metabolism, reduce your daytime appetite and eliminate cravings.
The Research
Venezuelan researchers looked at 94 obese women, half of whom were on a low carb diet and the other half on the Big Breakfast Diet. According to the June 2008 "Medical News Today," the findings presented at The 2008 Endocrine Society meeting showed those who ate a big breakfast lost 21 percent in body weight, while those on the low carb diet lost just 4.5 percent.
Meals & Calories
You can eat up to 1,200 calories each day on the Big Breakfast Diet -- with a high protein and carb breakfast counting for about half of these. Your lunch and dinner must be low carb and combined must account for the other half. The Big Breakfast Diet book includes a 28 day meal plan with recipes
Advantages
According to Everyday Diet, the notion that protein reduces appetite and helps to maintain lean muscles is true, and the diet incorporates this. The Big Breakfast Diet is also appealing if the idea of giving up sweets and some of your favorite foods is not palatable. Lastly, this diet is attractive in that there are no harmful ingredients or supplements involved.
Concerns
The Big Breakfast Diet promotes food choices that are without question not healthy, such as bacon and candy. In the long run, Everyday Diet argues in its review of this diet that this does not help with teaching people about making good long-term health decisions. A second concern for some is that unlike other popular diets, there is no website to help you on your weight loss journey.
