1. There is no Miracle Pill
When monitored by a medical doctor and used in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular exercise, diet pills can be a helping hand in weight loss; however, they are far too often over-used and abused. Diet pills are not a miracle cure for weight loss and can come with a long list of harmful side effects that not only wreak havoc on your body, they can also disrupt your metabolism, making natural, safe weight loss even harder.
2. When Energy Levels Reach the Red
Energy pills, which are most commonly mixed with appetite suppressants, are the most common forms of diet pills and are readily available by prescription or across the counter of your local mini-mart. Because these pills are so easy to obtain, they are also the most commonly abused. Energy pills carry a long list of side effects including dizziness, vomiting, hallucinations, hair loss, blurred vision, stroke, convulsions and even heart attack and death.
3. A Lighter Body With Heavy Consequences
Laxatives are available in syrup, powder and pill form and are a popular way to reach quick weight loss; however, the loss of weight it only an illusion. Laxatives do not limit the absorption of calories from food, therefore they do not aid in weight loss other than clearing the digestive system of bulky waste and robbing the body of needed water. When laxatives are over-used your body can become dependent and you may suffer withdrawal symptoms, including severe abdominal cramping, constipation, bloating, mood swings and general malaise.
4. Water is Weight You Don't Want to Lose
Diuretics are often used as a means of shedding excess water weight, and can be quite helpful for certain medical conditions or to soothe the symptoms of PMS. However, when diuretics are abused and used as diet pills, they not only strip the body of needed fluids, they also rob the body of important electrolytes and can lead to potassium deficiency and hospitalization. Additionally, when overused, the body can become dependent on diuretics, causing constant and permanent water retention.
5. Ipecac Can Cause Instant Death
Ipecac syrup, charcoal or other pills which induce vomiting may be the most dangerous forms of diet supplements. Designed to purge poisons from the system when accidentally ingested, the powerful ingredients which cause forceful vomiting can cause stroke, coma, cardiac arrest, hemorrhage and even death if used more than once in a short period of time. Substances which induce vomiting should only be used in emergency situations under the supervision of a medical doctor.
