The low-carb high-protein diet caught on about a decade ago. The theory behind it is that if you severely restrict your intake of carbs, your body will burn stored fat for energy and you will lose weight. This is a condition known as "ketosis." If this sounds like something you might be interested in doing, you can benefit from knowing which foods are low in carbs and high in protein.
Beef and Pork
Beef and pork are types of meat that are high in protein, fat, iron, zinc and they are very low in carbs. Sirloin patties, steak, beef tips, liver, pork chops and tender loins are all examples of these. Processed meats that are made from pork are also high in protein and low in carbs like bacon, corned beef, ham, hot dogs and porketta.
Poultry
Chicken, turkey, ducks and geese are all types of poultry that are low in carbs and high in protein. They also have dark meat which is high in fat and white meat that is lean. If any parts of poultry were to get breaded and baked or deep fried, they would no longer be low carb.
Fish
Fish and shellfish are high in protein, low in carbs and with the exception of cold water fish, they are all low in fat. Salmon, trout, tuna, halibut, crabs, clams, shrimp, oysters, mussels and talapia are all low-carb, high protein examples.
Game Meats
Venison, bison, rabbit, pheasants, elk and bear are all types of wild game that are low in carbs and high in protein.
Eggs
Eggs are high in choline, amino acids, cholesterol, fat and B vitamins. They are also low in carbs and high in protein. One large whole egg has about 6 g of protein and under a half a gram of carbs. Egg whites, hard boiled eggs, deviled eggs and any preparations that do not involve bread are all low in carbs and high in protein.
Dairy
Dairy products are high in calcium, protein and they have moderate amounts of carbs. But cheddar cheese is an exception. A 3.5 oz serving has 25 g of protein and .1 g of carbs. Plain soymilk is a dairy alternative that is high in protein and low in carbs.
Alternative
Tofu is a type of food that derives from soy beans and it is used by vegetarians as an alternative to meat. It is high in protein and low in carbs. A 100 g serving has approximately 8 g of protein and just under one gram of carbs.
