Stamina Rx Ingredients

In 2009, the FDA recalled Stamina Rx, an over-the-counter medication used to treat erectile dysfunction. The drug is deemed unsafe. The main ingredient, benzamidenafil, is considered dangerous for those with health condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease. Benzamidenafil may also interact with certain prescription drugs such as nitroglycerin. In addition, the drug may lower blood pressure significantly, posing risks of damage to the heart and brain. Other ingredients, such as yohimbe and epimedium (horny goat weed), are commonly used natural remedies for erectile dysfunction, but may also pose health risks.

Benzamidenafil

Benzamidenafil, the active ingredient in Stamina Rx, is thought to be effective for treating erectile dysfunction and other related sexual disorders. Stamina Rx, sold in health food stores and pharmacies over-the-counter, is labeled as a natural alternative to prescription drugs. However, benzamidenafil, is not named on the label and not approved by the FDA. The ingredient belongs to the same class of drugs commonly used for erectile dysfunction. Viagra, Cilais and Levitra also contain the active ingredient. However, these medications are prescribed by a doctor.

Yohimbe

Yohimbe, an herb derived from the inner bark of West African evergreen trees, was used in Africa to treat fevers, coughs and leprosy. During fertility and marriage celebrations, the herb was taken to boost sexual performance. In modern medicine, the herb continues to be a component in both herbal and prescription medications to treat erectile dysfunction by increasing blood flow to the genitals and acting as an aphrodisiac. Severe side effects could result, however. Dangers exist when used by those with heart problems, high blood pressure, anxiety and kidney disease and those taking antidepressants.

Epimedium

Epimedium (horny goat weed), an herbal remedy used in Chinese medicine for centuries, is derived from a plant native to Asia and the Mediterranean region. According to the Mayo Clinic, the herbal remedy is thought to raise low levels of testosterone and thyroid hormone. The leaves of the plant contain a host of flavanoids, which are thought to boost erectile function and energy levels and treat menopausal symptoms among women. The herb is a common ingredient in various formulas for erectile dysfunction due to its aphrodisiac-like characteristics. While the herb is not found to cause drug interactions, certain adverse effects such as breathing difficulty can occur when used in high doses.
