Asthma is a condition that occurs when your airways narrow, swell and produce extra mucus. Common signs and symptoms of asthma include shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, wheezing and coughing. Although asthma cannot be cured, symptoms can be controlled with medications and lifestyle changes. Certain foods may prevent or reduce the onset of asthma symptoms.

Fruits And Vegetables

Including fruits and vegetables in your daily diet may help prevent or reduce your risk of experiencing asthma symptoms, MayoClinic.com reports. Fruits and vegetables may improve the functioning of your lungs and supply your body with antioxidants that support and strengthen your immune system. Good fruit sources of antioxidants and nutrients include berries, oranges, melons, lemons, apples and tomatoes. Nutrient-rich vegetables include broccoli, spinach, kale, collard greens, peas, carrots, squash and onions.

Foods Rich in Omega-3

Foods that supply your body with the essential omega-3 fatty acids may help reduce and control symptoms of asthma. MayoClinic.com reports that these healthy oils may decrease inflammatory reactions in your body that trigger asthma symptoms. Omega-3 fatty acids can be obtained in fish, such as salmon, rainbow trout and sardines. They can also be found in plant sources such as flaxseed, flaxseed oil and walnuts.

Gingko Leaf Extract

Gingko leaf extract is a herb that may help prevent or reduce the onset of certain ailments such as bronchitis, fatigue and asthma, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Extracts of this herb are taken from its leaf and then consumed in tablets or capsules. However, gingko can also be consumed through a beverage such as commercially-available herbal teas.
