Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin, meaning that your body doesn't store it. It is responsible for immune function, collagen formation and healing and maintaining bones and teeth. Many people take supplemental vitamin C to prevent sickness, increase healing and to enhance the absorption of iron.

Diarrhea

Though rare, diarrhea is a potential side effect of taking ascorbic acid whether in the form of a tablet, capsule, lozenge, or within a solution, according to Drugs.com. Diarrhea is mostly seen in doses of 2 g or more per day, but can occur while taking only 1 g per day. Heartburn and stomach cramps can also occur with large doses. Before taking ascorbic acid supplements, it is best to consult with your doctor.

Upset Stomach

An upset stomach may occur as a side effect of taking ascorbic acid. Although, vitamin C is usually safe, high doses may cause an upset stomach. Generally, a high dose of ascorbic acid is more than 2,000 mg, or 2 g, per day, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Regardless of the dose, if you experience symptoms of upset stomach, decreasing the dose may help with these symptoms.

Diuretic Effect

Ascorbic acid can have a diuretic effect. This means it acts to pull water out of the body. Therefore, it is recommended that you drink lots of water when taking ascorbic acid to prevent dehydration and maintain a balance of fluids in the body. Other rare, but possible side effects with high doses includes side or low back pain and flushing or redness of the skin.
