Tire gauges are important accessory equipment. Under-inflated bicycle tires wear improperly or more rapidly. Over-inflated bicycle tires can become unstable in certain conditions. Using a pressure gauge to properly inflate bicycle tires ensures performance and prolongs the life of tires. Reliable bicycle tire gauges are most often defined by the quality of manufacturing. Tire pressure gauges are available in dozens of models, but all conform to one of four types.
Pocket gauges are often referred to as service gauges, stick gauges or pencil gauges. The image of a tire store manager with his trusty gauge clipped to a shirt pocket comes to mind for many. Pro-Line produces a selection of pocket gauges for bike tires that are available through numerous suppliers. Pocket gauges operate by pressing the head onto the tire valve stem. Tire pressure forces the numbered calibrator stick from the opposite end of the gauge. The reading is made where the stick aligns with the butt of the gauge. Other than the action of the calibrator stick, pocket gauges have no moving parts.
Dial
Dial gauges have a needle that provides tire pressure readings in pounds per square inch. Typical styles include a rigid fitting at the base of the dial casing. Another popular style features a short length of flex-hose with a fitting that clips to the tire valve stem. Sears manufactures the Accu-Gage with a pressure release that allows technicians to deflate tires to the recommended pressure. This method is commonly used when seating tubeless and tube tires securely on the wheel rim prior to proper inflation.
Digital
Digital tire gauges operate in much the same way as typical gauges. Pressing the valve fitting onto the tire valve stem provides an LED reading in PSI. Some manufacturers boast a lifetime battery. Other digital gauges require replacement batteries. Consumers rate the Accutire digital with top marks. Roadgear digital tire gauges are sold with carrying cases that prevent moisture from affecting the digital tire gauge. Clipping the case to a belt or inside a pocket provides cyclists with convenient access to the gauge during rides. Product comparisons show most similar priced digital tire gauges boast a similar degree of reliability.
Inflator
In keeping with terminology, inflator tire gauges provide PSI readings as the tire is being inflated. Typical inflator gauges have a short length of hose with a valve fitting. The gauge is operated by depressing a thumb lever on the body of the unit. Most bike shops use inflator gauges with an air compressor. Portable inflators for cycling in remote locations have an air bottle that holds a supply of compressed air.
Several manufacturers offer models that feature a dial or digital gauge that provides continuous readings during inflation. Mundial produces commercial inflator gauges in the style used in many bicycle and auto racing shops. The name Mundial is synonymous with top-line racing accessories found in pits and garages around the globe.
