Overeating at night can lead to obesity. At night, the body needs less food than at other times since it is metabolically less active. Binging at night when your metabolism is slow, tends to add weight quickly; however, there are ways to stop overeating at night without feeling hungry or deprived just before you hit the sack. Eating well throughout the day is a smart strategy in the battle of the bulge.

Step 1

Start your day with a healthy breakfast. According to Mayo Clinic most Americans skip breakfast, a habit which can lead to overeating throughout your day. The reason is that if you don't eat breakfast your body struggles to maintain the sugar levels in your blood, making you crave for candies and sweets. Consequently, you are less likely to make healthy choices or might skip other meals, making you more vulnerable to overeat later at night, since you haven't been eating properly during your day.

Step 2

Consume small and regular meals through your day to keep your blood glucose within normal levels and avoid fluctuations in your insulin response. This will help you control your appetite better, especially if you choose meals rich in fiber and protein and low in fat and sugar. If you don't have a balanced diet and you only eat at the end of the day, you will feel ravenously hungry creating conditions that lead to overeating at night: your body is attempting to compensate for all the energy it lost during the day.

Step 3

Avoid emotional eating or eating to cope with stress. Many times stress leads to overeating at night. If this behavior becomes a habit, it can develop into a serious eating disorder such as binge eating disorder, or compulsive overeating, according to the website HelpGuide. Cope with stress in healthy ways that don't involve food. Exercise boosts mood, improves your health and helps you win the battle against overeating.
