Herbs for Cancer

Cancer is defined as "any malignant growth or tumor caused by abnormal and uncontrolled cell division." In other words, one cell mutates, and then the cells in that part of the body start to grow out of control. No knows exactly why this uncontrolled cell growth happens. Initially, the cell damage occurs because of free radicals, byproducts of metabolism that can damage cell DNA. Free radicals may also form from exposure to radiation or harmful chemicals. Antioxidants are the natural substances that protect against free radical damage. The most effective cancer-fighting herbs are full of antioxidants.

Astragalus

Astragalus, also known as Huang Qi, is a Chinese herb used to strengthen the immune system and treat colds and the flu. In China it is also used to treat patients following chemotherapy. It is antibacterial and antiviral and supports killer T-cells. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, astragalus may also help protect the body from diseases such as cancer and diabetes. It contains antioxidants, which protect cells against damage caused by free radicals. Astragalus is available in 500 mg capsules or as an extract. One to two capsules, taken three times per day, are recommended for therapeutic purposes.

Cat's Claw

Cat's claw, or Uncaria tomentosa, is a plant native to the rain-forests of Peru. The bark has been used in herbal medicine to treat cancer and tumors. The University of California San Diego Medical Center explains that cat's claw contains a group of alkaloids that are thought to possess anticancer and antitumor activity and stimulate the immune system. Claims of cat's claw's effectiveness have recently been supported by laboratory studies done at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. There is ongoing research on the use of cat's claw in the treatment of both cancer and AIDS. Cat's claw is available in capsule form, in herbal teas or as an extract. Herbalists recommend as much as 3,000 to 6,000 milligrams (3 to 6 grams) per day in pill form, or four cups of strong tea.

Green Tea

Green tea is a popular tea in Japan, where cancer rates are lower than in other countries. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, several population-based clinical studies have shown that green tea helps protect against cancer. Other studies suggest that the polyphenols in green tea may be the key to preventing cancer. Some researchers also believe that polyphenols help kill cancerous cells and prohibit their proliferation. While further studies are needed to demonstrate green tea's effectiveness, it does appear to be a common denominator in countries with lower incidents of cancer. Three to six cups per day are recommended for therapeutic purposes. Most of the green tea bags found in the grocery stores do not contain high quality tea leaves. Consult an herbalist for a reliable supplier.

Turmeric

Turmeric is probably one of the most well-documented herbs studied for the treatment of cancer and may be used as a natural cancer treatment option. A number of studies, including one by a team at the Cork Cancer Research Center, show that turmeric has the ability to destroy cancer cells in the lab. Included as part of a normal diet, turmeric provides an excellent source of antioxidants. Used therapeutically, up to 10 grams per day has been taken without ill side effects. It can be purchased in 250 mg or 500 mg capsules.
