Memory loss can affect anyone, but it may be especially serious among the elderly. If your memory fails regularly, you could be suffering from either psychological stress or a physical disorder. Indian Ayurvedic practitioners see a connection between mind and body, and thus treat memory loss holistically by using diet, yoga and herbs. Speak to a qualified health care provider for an accurate diagnosis before starting herbal treatment.
Sweet Flag
Sweet flag, or Acorus calamus, is known as vacha in Ayurvedic medicine. The roots contain essential oil and terpenoids with sedative action, and practitioners use the herb to strengthen the nervous system. In his 2008 book, "Medicinal Plants: Chemistry and Properties," botanist M. Daniel from the M. S. University of Baroda states that vacha improves memory loss and intellect, and is also used to treat mental disorders. In her 2009 book, "The Holistic Herbal Directory," herbalist Penelope Ody recommends vacha to improve memory and mental awareness. Do not use vacha continuously for more than one month. Consult your doctor before using it if you are pregnant, nursing, or have a central nervous system disorder.
Brahmi
Brahmi, or Bacopa monnieri, is a traditional plant for improving memory, learning and cognitive impairment. M. Daniel states that it is a brain and nerve tonic, has anti-anxiety properties, and revitalizes the intellect. In a study published in the October 2007 issue of "Phytotherapy Research," researchers at Texas A&M University found that bacopa provides some protection against Alzheimer's disease and may be a useful treatment.
Intellect Tree
Intellect tree, or Celastrus paniculatus, is a climbing shrub, also known as malkangani, found throughout India. The seeds contain fatty acids and alkaloids, and have sedative and antidepressant actions. Botanist M. Daniel states that the seeds are used to sharpen the memory, and Ayurvedic practitioners also use the seed oil as a brain tonic and as a treatment for memory loss. A study published in the August 2004 issue of the "Journal of Ethnopharmacology" found that intellect tree's ability to improve memory loss may be due to its neuroprotective actions.
Gotu Kola
Gotu kola, or Centella asiatica, is a small trailing herb also called brahmi because, according to Penelope Ody, it increases knowledge of the Brahman, the supreme deity. She notes that gotu kola is a longevity tonic that also revitalizes the brain and nervous system, improves memory and may be especially help prevent senility. M. Daniel says that brahmi is recommended for improving memory, and reducing anxiety and high blood pressure. Avoid this herb if you are pregnant or if you have epilepsy. Do not use it continuously for more than six weeks.
