Chocolate contains flavonols, which are antioxidants that improve vascular health. However, it is important to be aware of the pitfalls of excessive chocolate consumption.
Sugar
Chocolate can have a wide range of sugar content, depending on the type. Dark chocolates tend to be bitter and contain less sugar than commercial chocolates, such as candy bars and milk chocolate pieces. This is particularly useful for diabetics, as they must closely monitor the amount of sugar consumed in their diet. Those who monitor their blood glucose levels should consume only small amounts of dark, or semi-sweet chocolate, or varieties that contain at least 70 percent cocoa content.
Caffeine
The University of Kentucky College of Agriculture says chocolate is a natural source of caffeine. Dark chocolates contain a significantly higher amount of caffeine than milk or white chocolate. Excessive caffeine consumption might lead to high blood pressure, insomnia, anxiety, stress, dehydration and lack of concentration.
Migraines
Chocolate can trigger a migraine headache, reports the University of Maryland Medical Center. The chemical tyramine, which is believed to perpetuate migraines, is found naturally in dark chocolate, but more research is needed to make a definitive conclusion. Also, raised blood sugar levels can trigger migraine headaches as well. Because chocolate can raise blood sugar, you should avoid it if you are prone to migraines.
Kidney Stones
Chocolate contains oxalates, which are associated with a higher risk of kidney stones. Those with a predisposition for kidney stones and those who have previously experienced a kidney stone should avoid chocolate consumption.
