Finding a lone pill with no other identification can be alarming or may simply arouse your curiosity. It can be difficult to identify a pill, however, if all you know is the pill's imprint and shape. This is because of the sheer volume and variety of pills that are sold, compounded by the fact that there are essentially no rules that you can follow to deduce a pill's identity from its imprint and shape. Fortunately, there are databases that you can use to identify your pill from these pieces of information.
Step 1
Write down every detail that you can observe from the pill. This includes color, shape, and the imprints on both sides of the pill, including numbers, letters and any other etchings.
Step 2
Enter the information into an online pill identifier. Drugs.com and RxList.com (see Resources section below) both have a searchable database of pills. The more details you can input, the more accurate the search tool will be.
Step 3
Compare your pill to the ones generated by the database. Most pill identifiers will provide pictures of both sides of the pills in their results so you can compare your pill with the image online.
