5-Hydroxytryptophan --- often abbreviated to 5-HTP --- is an amino acid that aids the production of melatonin and serotonin from tryptophan, two neurotransmitters that influence sleep and mood. 5-HTP is available over the counter and is often used as a natural sleep aid. Caffeine is a stimulant aiding in alertness and wakefulness. This stimulant is commonly found in soft drinks, coffee, tea and energy drinks. Using 5-HTP with caffeine is a balancing act.
Consult your physician prior to using 5-HTP or caffeine.
Step 1
Drink a caffeinated beverage in the morning and afternoon. Stop drinking caffeinated beverages at 3 p.m. Drinking caffeinated beverages later than this time can cause insomnia.
Step 2
Administer your 5-HTP with a glass of water one hour prior to going to bed. The typical dosage of 5-HTP is 200 mg.
Step 3
Plan to wake up and go to sleep at the same time each day. Adhering to a strict sleeping and waking schedule will encourage restful sleep.
