One of the most popular reality shows on television in 2010 is still The Biggest Loser. On this diet show, contestants weigh in each week, and the loser is voted off from among those with the lowest percentage of weight loss. While the weight loss on this show may be unrealistically high for average people, you can still figure out your percentage of excess weight loss every week. Knowing what percentage you lose can be a great motivational factor in your weight loss journey.
Step 1
Write down your starting weight. Subtract your current weight. This figure is your current pounds lost. If you began at 200 and are now at 190, your current pounds lost is 10.
Step 2
Divide your current pounds lost by your starting weight. This is your weight loss percentage fraction. Divide 10 by 200 to get .05.
Step 3
Multiply your weight loss percentage fraction by 100. This will reveal your percentage of excess weight loss. Multiply .05 by 100 to get 5 percent.
Tips and Warnings
- Record this weekly on a graph for motivation to stick with your diet.
- Percentage of weight loss is not the only factor in achieving a healthy lifestyle. Keep track of healthy food eaten and body measurements as well, instead of only relying on the scale to track your progress.
