If you have a low blood count you will have a reduced number of white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets in your body, according to MayoClinic.com. White blood cells help ward off infection, while red blood cells deliver oxygen to your cells. Platelets are involved in blood clotting. In some cases the term low blood count may refer only to decreased red blood cells. Certain herbs may help boost your low blood count. Ask your doctor if herbal remedies are appropriate for you.
Anemia
Anemia is a condition in which you are deficient in red blood cells, and it is one of the most common causes of a low blood count. The most common type of anemia, notes the University of Maryland Medical Center, is iron-deficiency anemia, though there are several other types, including anemia associated with long-term disease and cancer treatments. Some of the most common signs and symptoms associated with a low red blood cell count include increased heart rate, shortness of breath, headache, weakness and fatigue.
Herbs for Low Blood Count
Numerous herbs may help boost your low blood count. In her book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing," certified nutritional consultant Phyllis A. Balch states that yellow dock, shepherd's purse, red raspberry, pau d'arco, hawthorn berry, bilberry and mullein may be helpful in boosting your red blood cell count. Herbs that enhance your immune response and may increase your white blood cell count include astragalus, licorice root, red clover and bayberry. Not all herbs historically used in boosting your low blood counts may be backed by extensive scientific research studies.
A Helpful Herb
Yellow dock may be one of the most helpful herbs in treating your low blood count, especially your low red blood cell count. According to Dr. William A. Mitchell Jr., a naturopathic physician and author of "Plant Medicine in Practice," yellow dock has traditionally been used in treating anemia, eczema, ulcerative stomatitis and numerous other skin and liver conditions. Yellow dock is considered a blood purifier and cleanser. The root of the yellow dock plant contains the medicinal ingredients that are used in making herbal supplements.
Warning
A low blood count is usually cause for concern, although this health finding may be expected if you are undergoing certain cancer treatments. To better understand the role of herbs in your low blood count treatment plan, meet with a naturopathic physician or a medical doctor specializing in botanical medicine. Ask your doctor about the possibility of prescription drug interactions and side effects as well as appropriate dosage and the best ways in which to use herbs to treat this health problem.
