During the refining process, wheat germ and bran are removed from the grain to prolong shelf-life and give the product a smoother texture. Unfortunately, the nutrients that come along with the germ and bran are also removed, including omega-3 fatty acids.
Wheat Germ
A kernel of wheat originates from the germ, or embryo. The kernel sprouts from the germ and forms the other two components known as the endosperm and bran. Although the wheat germ is the smallest of the three, making up only 2.5 percent of the kernel, it packs a large amount of the nutrients. Aside from omega-3s, other key nutrients include vitamin E, folate, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc and fiber.
Omega-3s
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fatty acids that play a role in brain function and normal growth and development. They are called essential because your body cannot produce them on its own. There are 3 types of omega-3s: alpha-linolenic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid. Wheat germ falls under the alpha-linolenic acid category along with flaxseed, canola oil, leafy green vegetables, nuts and beans. There are 0.227 g of alpha-linolenic acid in 1 tbsp. of wheat germ.
Benefits of Omega-3s
According to the Kansas State University, consuming omega-3s through food and supplements can have multiple health benefits. Omega-3s are converted into eicosanoids, which affect blood pressure, blood clotting, cell growth and many other functions in the body. This fatty acid may also improve arthritis by reducing inflammation and slow tumor growth.
Uses for Wheat Germ
To reap the benefits of wheat germ, consume products made from whole grains. Wheat germ is also sold separately and can be added to cereals, baked goods, yogurt and smoothies. Due to its fat content, wheat germ may go rancid if not stored properly. Check the expiration date and store in the refrigerator once opened. Wheat germ has a shelf-life of approximately 8 to 10 months.
