Having a sore throat is painful and uncomfortable. It can make swallowing difficult and puts a damper on your day. It may also be a sign of an infection or more serious issue. Apple cider vinegar might help soothe a sore throat in some cases, especially those caused by infection. See a doctor for a chronic sore throat.
Sore Throat Causes
Several underlying conditions can cause a sore throat. Standard reasons include a cold, the flu and allergies. Bacteria may also be to blame, which can cause an infection. According to MayoClinic.com, heartburn or acid reflux may also contribute to the sensation of a sore throat.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is an ingredient used in numerous home remedies, especially organic formulations. According to the "Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar Miracle Health System," by Paul Bragg, Ph.D., organic apple cider vinegar is made by fermenting crushed apples. Typically, this makes alcohol, but the fermentation is continued until the liquid forms acetic acid or vinegar. According to Bragg, apple vinegar contains many nutrients, including potassium, calcium, iron and pectin.
Home Remedy
According to "Dr. Earl Mindell's Amazing Apple Cider Vinegar" by Earl Mindell, M.D., you can treat a sore throat by gargling with apple cider vinegar, especially if the sore throat is caused by bacteria. According to Mindell, vinegar fights infection due to its high acidity. A mixture of 2 tsp. of apple cider vinegar and 1 cup of warm water should be used to gargle several times per day.
Vinegar as Sore Throat Cause
Even though vinegar has supposed benefits for sore throats, it can cause a sore throat, too. According to MayoClinic.com, drinking apple cider vinegar can burn your throat and esophagus, causing pain. Other side effects may include stomach upset and drug interactions if you take diuretics or insulin.
