Taking phosphorus as part of an additional supplement for better health is common, although since phosphorous is already abundant in the body, people who take extra phosphorous probably have had it prescribed by a doctor for special needs or dietary concerns. One common side effect of taking homeopathic phosphorous is light-headedness.

What Causes the "Floaty" Feeling?

The light-headedness some people report after taking homeopathic phosphorus may be linked to calcification, calcium deposits in various areas of the body. Calcification can lead to tartar build-up on teeth, calluses on the hands and feet, arthritis in joints and bone spurs, kidney stones and gallstones. Calcification can also occur in soft tissue of organs, causing hardening of the cells. This condition can also lead to hardening of the arteries and heart valves. When the arteries harden, blood does not flow normally through the circulatory system, which leads to dizziness, light-headedness and fainting.

Phosphorus and Its Role in the Body

Phosphorus and calcium work together to nourish and build bones and teeth; approximately15 percent of the body's phosphorus can also be found in soft tissue and organs. Phosphorus helps the body dispose of waste in the kidneys, repairs tissues, and controls how other vitamins such as Vitamin D, magnesium and zinc are used. Foods that contain significant phosphorus include calcium-rich dairy products, meat and seafood, and most carbonated soft drinks. According to Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, the recommended daily allowance for phosphorus is only 700 milligrams daily for adults over 19. Since phosphorus is produced naturally in the body, there is no need to take too much extra.

Since most foods already have enough phosphorus to replenish that which is used normally, homeopathic phosphorus is generally used only for specific remedies -- sore muscle relief, as a laxative to aid digestion, or for decreasing the severity of common colds -- and only for a limited time and dosage. Under a medical adviser's care, patients with low levels of phosphorus, or hypophosphatemia; high calcium levels in the blood, or hypercalcemia; or kidney stones created by calcium deposits might benefit from extended homeopathic phosphorus treatments. Too much phosphorus in a normal, healthy body, however, can lead to calcification and the subsequent loss of blood flow, causing light-headedness or fainting.

Proper Balance

Without a proper balance between calcium and phosphorus, calcification can lead to circulatory problems and subsequently dizzy spells, so it is important to regulate phosphorus intake. Only use homeopathic phosphorus in limited dosages and for a short time. Make sure you get the recommended daily allowance of 700 milligrams per day, and avoid too many soft drinks.
