Staying fit and active can be difficult if you have a physical or mental disability. People with disabilities have several options for staying active and exercising at home, and one of the funnest and most convenient ways to do so is with a Wii gaming system.
Wii System
The Nintendo Wii is a video game system that allows players to use physical movements to control the game. For example, simulating a swinging motion allows a character in a tennis game to swing your racket. Though some disabilities might prevent you from jumping and bouncing around for all games, even those with physical limitations can use the Wii and some of its games to get exercise.
Wii Exercise
The Wii gaming system offers several games for people with disabilities to choose from. Wii offers a Wii Fit program that allows you to design and follow a workout routine at home. You can customize a routine that focuses on exercises you are physically able to complete.
Physical Disability
If you have limited mobility in the lower half of your body, you can still use your upper body to play Wii games such as bowling, fencing, baseball and board games. This can be a challenging and entertaining way to loosen up the muscles and exercise your arms. If you have a disability that reduces your total body mobility or if you tire easily, you can play Wii programs such as simulated board games that have small challenges between rounds and keep you moving for short periods.
Special Needs
The Kern County school system in Bakersfield, California, has used the Wii to help special needs students participate in physical education programs they would normally be unable to handle. Using a variety of Wii Fit games, including baseball, tennis, golf, boxing and dance, special needs students have been able to develop their coordination, balance, physical fitness and social interaction, according to the website for the Kern County Superintendent of Schools.
