Speeding up the rate at which your hair grows can be a challenge, especially if you've suffered from hair loss due to alopecia or a hereditary condition. However, you can increase the speed of hair growth and even the density of your hair by stimulating your scalp through massage. Scalp stimulation is relaxing and beneficial to the hair follicle and root.

Definition

Scalp stimulation is basically the process of rubbing or massaging the scalp with the intention of increasing blood flow to the area.

Function

By stimulating the scalp, you improve circulation and increase the rate of hair growth. However, not all stimulation is good. For instance, pulling on the hair can damage the roots and cause strands to fall out. Wearing your hair in a ponytail or under a hat can also damage the follicles and shafts of your hair, resulting in breakage or thinning. A gentle massage of the scalp is really all you need to see improved hair growth.

Significance

For some, the notion of scalp stimulation might sound silly, but it really is effective and recommended by the University of Maryland Medical Center. Having longer, thicker hair can also improve your self-confidence, which could improve your social skills and the first impression you give others.

Techniques

Stimulating your scalp can be relatively simple. For instance, while in the shower, you can take extra care when washing with shampoo to really work the lather into your scalp with your fingertips. Don't dig in with your nails. Instead, work the shampoo throughout your hair and scalp gently. This should be rather relaxing and will help remove built-up hair products, dandruff and oil, which can slow down hair growth.

Rosemary

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, using rosemary oil on your scalp can improve the strength of your hair and the rate at which it grows. Using this oil to massage your scalp can increase circulation and prevent hair from breaking as easily.
