How to Tell if a Man Is Lying

When it comes to lying, some men are better at it than others. If you have reason to suspect a man in your life is lying, there are ways in which you can read his body language and tone of voice to determine if he's telling the truth. While the science of deception is not an exact one, look and listen for these cues the next time you sense he is lying.

Step 1

Look for physical gestures that accompany the time he may be lying, such as licking the lips, blinking quickly or even not blinking at all. Any sign of a forced or intensely focused statement can tip you off that he's lying. Lying takes work, so the body may suggest physical effort to keep up the lie.

Step 2

Observe any discomfort on the man's part. Any unusual behaviors, such as excessively sweating or a nervous tic, such as an out-of-the-ordinary eye twitch or a hand that keeps moving, may serve as tip-offs.

Step 3

Watch his face closely for any micro-expressions that may occur. Micro-expressions are tiny flashes on the face that can be gone in an instant that can betray how a person really feels. For example, if he's trying to project happiness, yet for a moment has the furrowed brows of an angry person or the wide eyes of a scared person, these are tiny signs that indicate he could be lying.

Step 4

Notice his speech patterns. If he normally speaks well yet falls into a pattern that is less-than-eloquent or if his normally bumbling attitude comes across as smooth and rehearsed, it is likely he is not telling the whole truth. When he suddenly changes his voice inflections, such as sounding much more high-pitched or to stuttering when he usually doesn't,he may not be telling the truth.

Step 5

Ask him to repeat his story in reverse chronological order. Many liars practice telling a lie in order so they can keep details straight. Ask him to relay a story in reverse, however, and he may have trouble with even basic facts.

Tips and Warnings

  • Sometimes, men lie to spare your feelings. These include lying about his intelligence/education, your appearance, your friends, his job security or to prevent what he perceives as "nagging."
  • No two people lie alike which is why it is important to look for a number of signs when evaluating if someone is lying or not.
