When Candida albicans is present in the vagina in excessive amounts, a yeast infection can occur. Symptoms may include vaginal itching, white discharge, or burning during urination. There are a variety of natural and herbal remedies available to treat a yeast infection, however, before attempting any of these solutions, you should see a doctor to be evaluated and properly diagnosed. Avoid herbal remedies for yeast infection while you are pregnant unless first approved by your obstetrician.
Goldenseal
This herb contains a component called berberine, which has the pharmacologic action to inhibit the growth of fungi. Goldenseal can help the body fend off lingering localized infections, making it very useful in the treatment of yeast infections. Do not exceed 4 g per day in adults, as excessive use can irritate mucous membranes. The use of goldenseal is not recommended for children.
Acidophilus
Acidophilus is a naturally occurring, healthy bacteria found in the gastrointestinal tract. It is essential for keeping candida at proper levels within the body. This bacteria is found in many of the foods that we consume. Yogurt is a very good food source of acidophilus and has been proven to be beneficial in treating yeast infections. This beneficial bacteria is also found in other fermented foods such as sauerkraut. You can also find acidophilus in powder or capsule form at most natural health stores and vitamin shops. It is safe for use in both adults and children.
Garlic
A study conducted by B.A. Iwalokun and published in 2004 in the Journal of Medicinal Food, has proven the antimicrobial properties of garlic and its ability to stop the growth of candida albicans. It is best to use a fresh garlic clove in the early stages of the yeast infection. Garlic is still effective with an advanced yeast infection, but requires much larger dosing than in the beginning. Capsules or other garlic supplements may be taken to help destroy excessive yeast, however, some professionals recommend using a fresh clove as a suppository, placing it directly into the vagina. Any cut in the clove increases the potency, therefore, simply cutting the clove in half raises the administered dose. Start with the lowest dosing, an uncut clove, before proceeding to the more potent option.
Oregano Oil
The oil of oregano can be used topically when a yeast infection presents itself externally. When combined with clove oil, oregano oil has been shown in a 2004 study conducted by Chami N. to reduce fungal load, thereby lessening the risk of yeast infection. Take one capsule, three times daily on an empty stomach for the most promising anti-fungal effects.
