Jowls are those unsightly bits of skin that hang off the jaw line as we grow older. Although jowls are a common sign of aging, men and women don't have to simply live with them. There are several exercises that individuals can do on a daily basis to help prevent the development of jowls and help reduce their appearance. You can do these exercises once a day or once a week, or as often as you like, to achieve the results you're looking for in a relatively short period of time.

Pretend Chewing

Moving and exercising the muscles of the lower face, jaw and neck will help prevent jowls and get rid of them, according to Dermaxime. One beneficial exercise is to pretend you're chewing something, taking a variety of positions to work different muscles of the jaw line. For the first, tilt the face toward the ceiling and using a slow motion, pretend you're chewing gum. Keep the lips closed. Make the chewing move about 20 times. Or, you can firm the jaw and strengthen neck muscles by performing this move while turning the face so that the chin is turned toward your right shoulder. Chew with your mouth closed 20 times, and then repeat on the left side.

Upward Kissing

Tilt the head back so the eyes are looking at the ceiling. Purse the lips and pretend you're going to plant a big one on the ceiling. Push the lips out until you feel the pull on the underside of the chin area. Hold at the top of the "kiss" for a second or two and then relax. Keep the lips together throughout this exercise, repeating the kissing motion about five times to start, according to Dermaxime. Increase to 20 to 25 times. You may also increase the number of times you do this exercise on a daily basis for fast results and a firmer-looking jaw line.

Jaw Firming Exercise

Jack Lalanne has a great exercise for firming the chin line and jowls. It may look funny, but it's a great exercise to firm the entire lower face. Suck in the cheeks, like you're making a fish-face, and then puff out the cheeks, as if you're blowing into a tuba. Do this as fast as you can. You may feel a little slow to start, but you'll really feel it in the cheeks, along the jaw and along the entire side of the face.
