Due to the shift in hormones and change in metabolism that occurs after a hysterectomy and during menopause, many women experience unwanted weight gain. According to a 2009 study by the Department of Community and Family Medicine at Duke University Medical Center, women who underwent a hysterectomy weighed more than women who did not. The way to lose weight after a hysterectomy is the same weight loss concept as any other, and involves losing fat and gaining muscle. However, women who have had a hysterectomy may need to work harder to achieve results.

Step 1

Have a medical exam performed by your doctor to rule out any other causes of sudden weight gain, such as a thyroid problem. If there is another underlying cause of weight gain, it may need medical attention, and attempts to lose weight may not make a difference.

Step 2

Make dietary changes to reduce your calorie intake. Eat protein regularly, which can be found in foods such as poultry, eggs and seeds. Increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables as well.

Do cardiovascular exercises for at least 60 minutes three to four times a week. Examples include running, jumping rope and riding a bicycle. Swimming is also an option if you experience joint pain, because the buoyancy of the water supports your muscles and makes movements easier.

Do strength training exercises three to four times each week, giving your muscles a day to rest in between. Lift weights and do push-ups to build more muscle. Muscle burns calories more effectively than fat, so strength training is an effective way to get lean.

Step 5

Consult a nutritionist. Your nutritional needs and diet practices may differ from that of another woman, and a personal consultation can show you where you can make changes that will maximize your weight loss.
