Ginger is a root herb native to Asia that thrives in moist tropical soil. Ginger has been used as a culinary spice for over 4,400 years and as an herbal treatment for digestion, nausea and diarrhea for at least the last 2,000 years. You’ll also find ginger listed as an ingredient in many over-the-counter dietary supplements, even though there is no medical evidence to support ginger as having a direct effect on weight loss. Ginger is included as part of a remedy for obesity in Ayurveda, a holistic doctrine that focuses on body type and balancing your body’s internal rhythms. To lose weight with ginger, incorporate Ayurvedic remedies to aid digestion.

Ayurvedic Weight Loss Remedies with Ginger

Step 1

Drink ginger tea two to three times a day to help increase digestion. Ayurvedic medicine refers to increasing digestion as part of a remedy for obesity as "enhancing digestive fires."

Step 2

Chew on a slice of ginger root a few minutes before each meal. Alternatively, mix a small amount of grated ginger root with lemon juice and salt. Eat two pinches of the mixture before each meal. In addition to enhancing digestion, eating a small amount of ginger before each meal can decrease appetite.

Step 3

Spice your foods with ginger as often as possible.

Step 4

Mix 1 teaspoon of the tonic herb guggul with ginger and honey to taste. Take the mixture two to three times each day to stimulate weight loss, as prescribed by Ayurvedic physicians.

How to Make Ginger Tea

Step 1

Grate 1-1/2 teaspoons of fresh ginger root into a 2-cup glass measuring cup. Use one tablespoon of ginger if you prefer a mild tea flavor, or if you are using a smaller teacup.

Step 2

Add boiling water to the 1-1/2-cup line on the measuring cup. Allow the ginger to steep in the hot water for 10 minutes.

Step 3

Strain the ginger tea from the measuring cup into a tea mug or tea cup.

Step 4

Sweeten the ginger tea with 1 to 2 tsps. of honey, according to your tastes. A dash of lemon juice will also add flavor to the ginger tea.
