Decreasing your body mass index (BMI) and managing your weight can be a difficult task. Diets high in natural foods, including fruits, have been shown to help an individual lose weight and keep it off. Your BMI assesses your weight as it relates to your height and is used to clarify what a healthy weight would be for you. You can manage your weight by keeping your BMI in the normal range. Fruits are naturally high in fiber and antioxidants and low in calories. Eating more fruit allows an individual to better manage BMI and be more successful at managing weight.
Lowered Risk for Chronic Disease
Your personal health and weight have direct correlation. If your BMI category is overweight or obese, you have a higher risk for many chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer such as colon and breast, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and liver and gallbladder diseases. A diet rich in fruits is high in fiber and antioxidants, which are both important factors in fighting chronic disease. By adding better food choices like fruit into your diet, you will keep blood pressure and cholesterol levels under control and ward off more serious issues such as heart disease and cancer.
Filling for the Body
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have performed multiple studies that show benefits of a diet high in fruits on appetite. Studies show that by consuming fruits, people are able to eat enough to feel satiated even though they are eating fewer calories. When you are full, you will stop eating, which makes it possible for you to decrease your BMI. Fruits are also high in fiber, which make them more filling for the body, and thus, help curb appetite as well as decrease risks of high blood pressure, heart disease, and high cholesterol.
Better Weight Management
Utah State University completed a study showing the effects of fruit consumption on individuals with high BMI numbers. Results showed that the consumption of fruit plays a unique and vital role in decreasing body mass index numbers. The relationship between fruit consumption and better weight management was even significant after other factors such as vegetable consumption, exercise, and caloric consumption were considered. Multiple studies conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show similar results; a diet high in fruits as well as vegetables is more balanced, and in turn, helps one maintain a balanced weight.
Decreased Sugar Cravings
Fruits are high in natural sugars, which make them easier to digest and be absorbed by the body. These natural sugars are also useful in curbing sugar cravings. The American Dietetic Association found that individuals that struggle with higher BMI numbers often consume high amounts of processed sugars. Eating fruit snacks instead of refined sugars found in candies and baked goods can again help an individual have a healthier BMI.
