The herpes simplex virus type 2, or HSV-2, is the main cause of genital herpes, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Some herbs may be able to help lesions heal more quickly during a herpes breakout. Note that herbal remedies are not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as safe or effective treatments for genital herpes. Three prescription antiviral medications are FDA-approved to reduce the severity and frequency of outbreaks. Genital herpes can be spread from one person to another, even in absence of an outbreak. Please speak with your physician before using herbs topically or internally to treat herpes or another sexually transmitted disease.

Lemon Balm

Lemon balm, a pleasantly odiferous herb native to Europe, has traditionally been used by herbalists to treat insomnia and pain, states the University of Michigan Health System. Lemon balm's flavonoids and phenolic acids are two active constituents believed to help it fight herpes. The Health System notes that topical lemon balm is well-supported by research for treatment of cold sores; however, there's less evidence to support it for use on genital herpes sores.

Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has traditionally been used to treat wounds, says the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and has found its way into numerous skin care products, from lotions to sunscreens. The UMMC states that there's some evidence to suggest that aloe vera cream with a 0.5 percent concentration is beneficial for genital herpes in men when applied topically.

Rhubarb and Sage

At least one study suggests that a cream containing rhubarb and sage speeds up the healing of herpes lesions. The Butler Hospital in Rhode Island reports that a double-blind trial of 149 study participants with oral herpes used prescription Zovirax cream, sage cream and cream containing sage and rhubarb. The sage and rhubarb combo proved to be as effective as Zovirax. The UMMC indicates that more research is needed on this particular treatment.

Siberian Ginseng

Siberian ginseng is one herbal that is suggested for internal use for treatment of herpes. The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center cautions that there's little evidence from clinical trials that this herb helps you fight any kind of disease or infection. The UMMC states that a six-month clinical trial using 93 herpes sufferers suggests that it may reduce the frequency, severity and length of outbreaks. Avoid Siberian ginseng if you're pregnant or breastfeeding or have high blood pressure, sleep apnea or narcolepsy, cautions the UMMC.

Caution and Concerns

The American Social Health Association does not advise using nonprescription creams or ointments for genital herpes, as these can hinder healing and cause sores to linger even longer. The best way to expedite healing is to keep area clean and dry.
