Tooth loss, also known as edentulism, occurs when one or more teeth are extracted or fall out due to disease or injury.Typically, tooth loss is associated with older individuals but the Academy of General Dentistry suggests that 27 percent of patients between the ages of 21 and 30 often experience their first tooth loss during that time. False teeth, also known as dentures, can cause bone loss and require constant manipulation to correctly position them. However, several denture alternatives exist to provide a conscious free smile.
Dental Implants
According to the American Dental Association, dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are anchored surgically into the jaw to hold a bridge or replacement tooth in place. Implants are permanent, stable and don't rely on other teeth for support. Consequently, an implant can be anchored for one or multiple teeth. Implants are a good tooth loss solution because they feel and look like natural teeth. Dental implants can also be anchored for partial or full removable dentures to save money.
Porcelin Veneers
Veneers are thin porcelain shells or composite resin material that are bonded to the teeth. According to the American Dental Association, they are placed over the front of the tooth to add a more cosmetic appearance, protection and strength.Typically, veneers change a tooth's size, color or shape. They also mask undesirable defects such as root canal procedures or random injury damage.
Crowns and Denture Bridges
Another alternative for dentures and missing teeth utilize denture bridges and crowns. Denture bridges can be anchored to build a bridge in an area where there is tooth loss. According to the Creighton University School of Dentistry, crowns may be placed on dental implants or natural teeth. Dentists can also customize tooth sizes and colors to create ideal smiles.
