Having a treadmill at home provides you with a convenient way to get in a workout even if you can't make it to the gym. There are dozens of in-home treadmill manufacturers, each one with numerous model lines. Two popular brands are ProForm and NordicTrack, which sport some surprising similarities but significant differences.

Both ProForm and NordicTrack brands are produced by the same company, Icon Health and Fitness. According to treadmilldoctor.com, Icon is the largest retail fitness company. It also makes other popular brands such as Weslo, Weider and FreeMotion.

According to treadmill review sites treadmill-ratings-reviews.com and treadmilltalk.com, both ProForm and NordicTrack make solid machines with many features. However, ProForm is generally considered a slightly lower-end brand than NordicTrack, and this is reflected in the price. In October 2010, the new ProForm model treadmills range from $600 to $2,000. NordicTrack sells models as low as $650 on its website, but there are also more expensive models, topping out at $3,000.

Both ProForm and NordicTrack pack lots of features into their machines. Many NordicTrack treadmills are iFit Live compatible. Your treadmill connects to the Internet wirelessly, allowing you to download workouts, track your fitness progress, create customized programs and even compete against your friends. NordicTrack also features a few models with up to a 40 percent incline, versus the more standard 10 to 15 percent incline. ProForm treadmills are known for their cushioned walking decks and fold-away design. The Crosswalk series also features arm levers so you can work out your upper and lower body simultaneously.

The more expensive ProForm models offer the same warranty as all the NordicTrack models. These treadmills have a lifetime frame warranty, lifetime motor warranty, two year parts and one year labor warranty. On its less expensive treadmills, ProForm offers a lifetime frame warranty, 25-year motor warranty and one year on parts and labor.

ProForm and NordicTrack both have their own websites where you can purchase treadmills, ellipticals, incline trainers and exercise bikes. You can also find both brands at large online fitness retailer websites. ProForm treadmills can be found at Walmart and both ProForm and NordicTrack machines are sold at Sears.
