Various scar-reduction treatments and techniques are available in the market that can help in reducing scar visibility, although complete removal is possible only with plastic surgery. Scar reduction through over-the-counter creams or patches and home remedies may take a lot of time to diminish scars; you will need to be patient.

Causes

Typically, any deep wound or injury can result in scarring. Picking your acne can also increase the chances of the pimple's leaving a scar. This happens when the skin is broken and the body repairs it by producing collagen, which has a different appearance compared with normal skin. Also, this area will almost never have any hair growth.

Treating Scars

According to an article in the "Telegraph," it is easier to heal fresh scars, but scars that have become permanent are less likely to respond to any kind of treatment. Medical treatments include laser and steroid creams.

Home Remedies

If you sustain a deep wound or injury, keep the area clean. Some scars fade in a couple of weeks, while others take longer to heal. One natural remedy is to apply coconut oil to the affected area once the scab has fallen off. This is a treatment commonly used in Southeast Asian countries and has been around for centuries. There is no scientific evidence this treatment works, but it is worth giving it a try.

Over-the-Counter Creams

Creams such as Mederma are available over the counter and are recommended by doctors as well. Most of these creams contain herbal extracts considered safe for the skin, but it is not sure if these creams actually work. You can also ask your doctor to recommend a cream or gel he feels is beneficial in speeding the healing process.

Silicone Gels

Silicone gel treatments are used to improve scar appearance by making them lighter. The treatments also reduce scarring after surgical procedures. Dermatologists recommend silicone-gel based creams or patches because they also help in reducing inflammation, redness and itching.
